The latest TFOS DEWS report from 2017 introduced an update to the definition of dry eye and mentioned new formulations to deal with this disease. One consists in an artificial tear containing two wetting agents that work in synergy. The report states that a widespread option which is showing very good results involves combining hyaluronic acid with cellulose derivatives.
What is the secret to the dual concept?
Without doubt, the key lies in the synergy between both wetting agents, as shown in recent studies.
How does this synergy work?
By enhancing the viscoelastic properties of hyaluronic acid, which is more viscous when the eye is resting (open) and less when shear stress comes into play (blinking).
Including a second wetting agent that derives from cellulose and “interlaces” its molecules with hyaluronic acid gives the product extra viscosity when the eye is open. This means the product stays in the eye longer.
Meanwhile, the viscosity of the formula remains low when blinking. As a result, despite containing two wetting agents, the product does not cause blurred vision.
The term polymer defines a substance composed of large molecules which are formed when one or more simple units (monomers) join together.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural polymer produced by our body. It can be found in cartilage, connective tissue, the crystalline lens and the vitreous humour, and features moisturizing and regenerating properties.
Hydroxyethyl cellulose is a gelling agent derived from cellulose, another natural polymer. It is often used both in compounding and to produce artificial tears. It creates gels that are highly stable and optimally compatible.
Hyaluronic acid and hydroxyethyl cellulose interlink their molecules to form a three-dimensional structure called a “dual polymer”. The resulting mesh helps to protect, hydrate and regenerate the cornea and boosts the properties of both wetting agents.
Based on this dual concept, we at Disop have created a new product: Acuaiss Dual Gel.
Acuaiss Dual Gel is a gel tear with a liquid base and a viscous texture. It contains very pure hyaluronic acid at a high concentration (0.30%) along with hydroxyethyl cellulose (0.10%), which is known for its viscosity enhancing properties.
The gel provides long-lasting relief for people who suffer from moderately to severely dry eyes and does not cause blurred vision. It is extremely convenient to use and can be applied during the day and at night.
Acuaiss Dual Gel is available in a 10 ml bottle and in single-dose format.
